September is an exciting month as it’s festival season in Galloway.
Stranraer Oyster Festival
The Stranraer Oyster Festival, now in its 7th year, returns from 12-14 September 2025. In addition to enjoying oysters by the dozen, there is so much to see and do during the weekend from live music and celebrity chef cooking demonstrations to the Scottish Oyster Shucking Championship, the Oyster Eating Competition and browsing all the wonderful market stalls. You’ll find our luxury festival accommodation in Dumfries and Galloway only seven miles from Stranraer.

The Oyster Bar at the Stranraer Oyster Festival
In addition to the oyster bar, where you can try both Loch Ryan native oysters and farmed rock oysters, there are so many wonderful places to eat. I’m hoping that the Scran Van from Kirkcudbright will be back this year. Scallop, lobster and crab salads to die for.
Wigtown Book Festival
Wigtown Book Festival springs into life for 10 days from 26 September to 5 October 2025. Now in it’s 25th year, the festival is a charming celebration of the literary word and attracts lots of high-profile authors to speak. This year’s line-up includes Rory Cellan-Jones, Reeta Chakrabarti, Jeremy Hunt and comedian, Helen Lederer talking about her howlingly funny memoir. One of my festival favourite’s, Damian Barr, will be introducing his book, The Two Roberts, about the love between painters Colquhoun and MacBryde.

It’s not just talks on offer. Julie Wilson and Greg Hemphill take you on a wild swim and there’s a Spaghetti Western Supper where you can join director-writer Jessica Fox for a relaxed evening of Sicilian food and music. There are fireworks, theatre, walks, seminars and new for 2025, a pop-up sauna and of course, books!
