October Half Term Activities in Dumfries & Galloway

There are so many fun things to do with the family in Dumfries & Galloway during October half term while staying at one of our luxury holiday cottages on the coast in Galloway.

We still have availability at some of our luxury holiday cottages near the coast in Galloway.  Rates start at £375 for a three-night stay for 4 people at Stables Cottage to £689 for a four-night stay for 8 guests at High Clachan Farmhouse.  Both have cosy log burning stoves and a wonderful network of woodland walks and coastal paths right on their doorstep.

Logan Botanic Garden

The October half term holiday is a good opportunity to see Logan Botanic Garden and the bright splashes of colour provided by the gorgeous dahlias and nerines before the gardens close for winter on November 15.

As an unusual alternative to pumpkin carving, Logan is running a couple of different creative workshops for children – they can try their hand at kite making on Thursday, October 20th from 1-2.30pm.  The following week, on Thursday, October 27th, it’s a scary skeleton making session from 1-2.30pm.  Both activities are free with normal garden entry and you don’t need to pre-book.

Castle Kennedy Gardens

Castle Kennedy Gardens, which is only 15 minutes’ drive from Corsewall Estate and our luxury holiday cottages on the coast in Galloway, is rolling out lots of activities as part of its Halloween Festival from October 8-31.

For little ones, there’s an I-Spy trail in the walled garden.  It’s a new accessible trail where you help Witch Wynda find all her friends who are lost in the walled garden.  There’s a reward for those who find all 10.

If you want to really get the kids extremely well exercised during the day, then I would definitely advise signing up for the spooky pumpkin trail.  With markers throughout the gardens, it’s a bit like a scavenger hunt.  Answer all the questions successfully at each marker to win a reward.

There’s also a witches and wizards digital trail, with more challenging tasks and puzzles to complete.  Prices for the Pumpkin Festival activities start from £2.50 plus admission to the gardens.

Kitchen Coos & Ewes

Nominated for a Scottish Thistle Award, Kitchen Coos & Ewes is a must when you are holiday at Corsewall Estate and one of our luxury holiday cottages on the coast in Galloway.  It’s a wonderful farm experience, where farmers, Neale and Janet McQuistin of High Airyolland Farm, allow you to get up close and personal with their herd of Highland cows from the safety of a specially built trailer.  Afterwards, there’s a cuppa and the most delicious fresh baking from the farmhouse kitchen.  Personally, I can’t resist the Highland coo shaped shortbread!  Prices range start from £14 for adults and £7 for children and tickets must be reserved in advance.

Cream o’ Galloway

Try your hand at ice cream making and create your very own flavour at Cream o’ Galloway when staying at one of our luxury holiday cottages on the coast in Galloway.

We did just this with the family in the summer holidays and we were absolutely delighted with the results.  I made the most deliciously refreshing lemon curd and white chocolate ice cream – obviously mine was the best! This is a good activity to plan for a wet day, not that we have any of those on the Rhins Riviera!

Currently, the sessions are reduced to half price – £12.50 and there is good availability throughout October, but do book in advance online.

 Cocoabean Company

The Cocoabean chocolate factory at Twynholm is going all out over Halloween this year with the Pumpkin Patch, from October 16-30.  Outside there’s pumpkin picking, farmyard games and haybale fun, while inside there’s pumpkin carving and painting, a hot chocolate station and lots of Halloween themed activities.  And of course, it’s the perfect place to stock up on a selection of chocolate eyeballs!  Do book in advance.  Tickets cost £14 per child.
