Food Shopping while on holiday in one of our Dumfries & Galloway Holiday Cottages

Food when on holiday at one of our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages on Corsewall Estate is an important part of the mix.  You can be organised and have food delivered, shop en route or pick up things when you are here.  Here are our top 12 recommendations.

Loch Arthur Farm Shop

If you are travelling along the A75 to our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages, then do take a small detour to Loch Arthur Farm Shop, a Camphill working community, at Beeswing and you’ll be richly rewarded.  There’s a garden, bakery, creamery and butchery and about 60% of everything that is sold in the shop, is either made or grown by the community.  Stop for lunch and take your time stocking up on artisan cheeses, freshly bread baked, organic meat, fruit and vegetables.  There are is row upon row of cakes, pies, biscuits, dips and chutneys from which to choose.

Kilnford Farm Shop

Kilnford Farm Shop is an amazing emporium right beside the A75 just beside Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary.  You could grab a fresh meat hamper – choose from home reared Galloway beef, Blackface lamb or chicken, or opt for one of their BBQ boxes.  Kilnford also offers a vegetable box and there’s an excellent deli counter – where you could pick up some artisan cheeses, meats and pies – which all help to feed the family while on holiday at one of our Dumfries and Galloway holiday cottages on the coast.  They offer a click and collect service or you can order online and have it delivered to your luxury Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottage direct.

Dowhill Farm Shop

Dowhill Farm Shop is on the A77 between Turnberry and Girvan – so if you are travelling to our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages from Ayrshire or Glasgow, this is a great place for a quick stopover.  It’s excellent in late spring as you can pick up some delicious locally grown Ayrshire potatoes.  Potatoes have never tasted so good!  Boil with some mint and when cooked, add lots of butter and chives – what a treat.  All year round you can buy excellent Dalduff Farm beef and steak pies and they have a good range of their own frozen ready meals too.

Ferry Fish

Ferry Fish offers a wonderful service for guests at our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages.  They deliver to our luxury holiday cottages near the coast in Dumfries and Galloway every Wednesday. Extremely popular with our discerning Corsewall Estate Holiday Cottage guests are the luxury seafood graze boxes, with delicious treats from lobster and crayfish tails to mussels and crevettes – all freshly prepared by Ferry Fish and ready to eat!

Ferry Fish’s Luxury Graze Box

I often order the fish pie mix – if you use Jamie Oliver’s easy peasy fish pie recipe, you don’t have to faff with making a white sauce – you use cream instead.  Ok, so maybe it’s not so good for diets, but calories don’t count on holiday!

It’s just a question of ordering online by the prior Monday and mentioning which cottage you are staying in.  If you’re going to be out, Ferry Fish will happily pop your order in the fridge in our laundry hub behind Corsewall House.

Galloway Smokehouse

Galloway Smokehouse at Carsluith is the place if you want to pick up some dressed lobsters or a large side of award winning smoked salmon.  It’s just beside the A75 between Gatehouse of Fleet and Newton Stewart – so a handy stopping off point.

Galloway Lodge

Galloway Lodge in the pretty town of Gatehouse of Fleet is the perfect place to stock up on a wide range of locally produced jams, marmalades, honey, chutneys, mustards and oat cakes – either to be consumed in one of our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages or they make great gifts to take home as presents for friends and the neighbours.  Have lunch or a coffee in the café here or grab a delicious Cream O’ Galloway ice cream to go.

William Fraser the Butcher

William Fraser the Butcher, located on Hanover Street in Stranraer, is well worth a shopping visit.  As well as wide range of meat from steak and lamb to gammon joints and mince, they also produce wonderful steak pies, sausages and lots of ready to cook dishes from stuffed pork and apple patties and sweet chilli chicken fajitas to steak black bean stir-fry – which take all the stress out of cooking while on holiday in one of our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages.

Barnbarroch Organic

Barnbarroch Organic – a family farm specialising in organic beef – from treat-yourself-ribeye, decadent fillet steaks and melt-in-the mouth roasting joints to wonderful gluten-free beef burgers and sausages.  Put in your order online and they will deliver direct to your holiday cottage.  Do check in advance when they are delivering to our area, the Rhins of Galloway.  Or, if you’d rather have a night off when staying at one of our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages, then head to The Lighthouse Bar and Restaurant at Sands of Luce Holiday Park and choose one of their burgers from the menu.

Earth’s Crust Bakery

Earth’s Crust Bakery can be a little bit tricky to find as it has a very unassuming shop frontage on St Andrew Street in Castle Douglas, but do persevere.  Inside this artisan bakery is an Aladdin’s cave of all things edible from delicious patisseries to sour dough loaves, quiches to cakes and tartes.  Just writing about it makes me want to rush over to the shop!  In order to avoid disappointment, I would put in an order in advance and pick it up either en route to your Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottage or during your stay.

Caroline’s Catering

Or, you could combine having a night off with a night in at one of our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages and order some delicious, pre-cooked dishes from Caroline’s Catering from lasagne, fish pie and beef stroganoff to roasted veg and bubble and squeak to pasta salad.  Caroline has also introduced some great meal deals for two or four – so you can choose a main course, a couple of  side dishes and a pudding.  Don’t forget to order pudding – my money’s on the raspberry and white chocolate profiteroles but twist my arm and I could be tempted by the mixed fruit pavlova.

Leswalt Village Shop

In the next-door village of Leswalt, you’ll find the excellent Leswalt Village Shop.  Where you pick up just about anything at just about any time!  If you’ve forgotten something vital, it’s just over a five minute drive from one of our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages.

Love Milk

Treat yourself to a bottle of delicious non-homogenised (which basically means it really tastes of something) whole milk produced locally in re-usable bottles by the lovely Love Milk people.  Pop along from one of our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages to the Wee Aird Dairy, on London Road on the edge of Stranraer.  You might even be tempted by their range of milk shakes too.

Finally, in terms of the supermarkets for basics, Morrisons and Asda deliver to our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages and Tesco offers a click and collect service.

I think I’ve exhausted all my foodie secrets for now – but a bit of planning in advance of your holiday at one of our Dumfries & Galloway holiday cottages on Corsewall Estate will help you to have a relaxing and peaceful break.  And if you haven’t yet booked your holiday – do check out our dog friendly self-catering accommodation.
