Many of our guests come to stay at Corsewall Estate Holiday Cottages because of our wonderful woodland walks and coastal paths, which are literally right on the doorstep.  They are ideal cottages for walking holidays in Dumfries and Galloway as there’s no need to drive anywhere to find a good walk – just step out the door.

The Corsewall Loop

The Corsewall Loop path takes you up over the ‘Ace of Clubs’ – an early 19th century plantation, laid out in the formation of the British army at the Battle of Corunna in 1809.  The views from the top of the hill are tremendous.  On a clear day you can see Ailsa Craig, Arran and sometimes the Paps of Jura in the distance.  At this time of year, the woods are carpeted in a beautiful blue hue of the wild bluebells.

The Beach Loop

One of my regular morning dog walks is down the Fisher Drive to Boat Bank on Loch Ryan, along the beach and then back into Corsewall Estate at the far end of the beach.  It’s a great route for bird watching – herons, oyster catchers and I recently heard a cuckoo in the woods beside the beach – such a joyous springtime treat.

Port Beg to Lady Bay

This coastal path, which was first opened in 2020, hugs the coastline and leads you along pretty coves to the wonderfully sandy beach of Lady Bay, a family favourite for picnics, paddle boarding and swimming.

Our luxury cottages for walking holidays in Dumfries and Galloway are within a short distance of charming walks slightly further afield too.

My favourite is from Killantringan Lighthouse to Portpatrick along the Southern Upland Way, which crosses two pretty beaches and affords wonderful views across the sea to Northern Ireland.  Park up at Killantringan and head to Portpatrick, have lunch at the Dine at Dunskey Guest House or the Crown Hotel and walk back again.  It’s a leisurely three-hour return trip.

Slightly further afield at Loch Trool, in the heart of the Galloway Forest Park, there’s a circular walk starting from the Caldons Loch Trool trail car park.  The scenery is spectacular at any time of year.  It is very different to the rolling hills and sandy beaches near our cottages for walking holidays in Dumfries and Galloway.  With all the hills and the pine trees you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported north to the Highlands of Scotland.
